Multiple intelligences enable learners to understand concepts and ideas in a variety of ways. Technology can play a significant role in developing a range of intelligences.
Linguistic intelligence
Children who enjoy using written and spoken words show linguistic intelligence. There are many ways of building linguistic intelligence through ICT, such as:
Change the language of the user interface in Windows®. For example, use Russian or Arabic Windows
Use built-in sound recording in Office 2003 to embed spoken word into presentations or essays; or use a microphone to dictate text into documents
Use tools such as Document Map, Spell-check, Auto summarise, Thesaurus or Readability Scores in Word 2003 to help develop writing skills
Essential technology
Multilingual features in Office
Multilingual support in Windows XP
Your computer in the language of your choice
Proofing tools in Office 2003

Logical-mathematical intelligence
Children who enjoy logic, order and making sequences and who readily spot patterns show mathematical and logical intelligence. Computers are a useful tool for developing this.
Produce a 3-D surface chart of a well-known mountain by entering spot heights from an OS map into Excel. Spin it around and look at it from the underside
Set up a Crime Scene Investigation. Use data-logging and Excel to conduct a forensic analysis
Create computer games. Start with simple storyboards using PowerPoint; build game websites using FrontPage® and then develop more complex games using Visual Basic®
Essential technology
Excel 2003
3-D surface charts
Use triggers to create an interactive slide show in PowerPoint
Visual Basic .NET 2003

Musical intelligence
Playing or listening to music activates both sides of the brain and is a powerful stimulus to learning. In one school, students learn French by writing rap songs. Students can:
Use the Tablet PC composition tool to compose music
Use the Microsoft® DirectMusic® Producer authoring tool
Essential technology
Tablet PC Music Composition Tool
DirectMusic Producer

Visual and spatial intelligence
Children with good visual and spatial intelligence enjoy creating images or objects. Timelines, mind mapping, diagrams, photos, video and graphs all help develop visual intelligence.
Create brainstorming diagrams or mind maps using Visio®
Let students draw and paint directly into a Tablet PC with painting, graphics and design packages
Visually display geographic data with MapPoint®
Essential technology
Creating a mind map with Microsoft Visio
Tablet PC
MapPoint 2004

Interpersonal intelligence
Children with interpersonal intelligence play collaboratively, see things from other people's viewpoints and enjoy being in teams.
Email and the web are essential in the modern workplace and are increasingly used in schools to help children work together
Desktop video conferencing through Instant Messenger can be used to bring in experts from outside the classroom and help children work collaboratively
Essential technology
Outlook 2003
Exchange Server
Live Communications Server 2003
Windows Messenger

Intrapersonal intelligence
A variety of technologies can help students work independently and develop intrapersonal intelligence and skills.
Microsoft Class Server enables pupils to work on independent programmes of work
Encarta® provides a wealth of information and Multimedia resources and enables children to learn independently
E-portfolios are increasingly used to encourage children to build up a collection of their best work
Essential technology
Class Server
Encarta
E-portfolio
SharePoint Portal Server

Bodily kinaesthetic intelligence
Children with bodily kinaesthetic intelligence show physical dexterity.
Use video or digital photos in PowerPoint to demonstrate how to carry out a task or movement in PE or Design and Technology
Pen-based Tablet PC applications can help develop dexterity
Get children to produce work in Design and Technology. Film them working and build web pages so others can see how they made their items
Essential technology
Movie Maker 2
Tablet PC
FrontPage 2003

Naturalist intelligence
Children who have developed this intelligence can see patterns, relationships and causes and effects in the natural world.
Tablet PCs are a great tool to take on field trips
USB data-loggers or probes, digital microscopes and digital cameras can be plugged straight in to a Tablet PC and data can be analysed in Excel
Microsoft Access enables children to build databases of species and their characteristics
